| General Overview | Kolen has never been a loner in life. He’s always had friends, and very rarely encountered any friction with anyone. He is likeable and approachable, never shirking his pastoral responsibilities towards crew. He doesn’t mind if people refer to him as “Doc” while on duty, as that was his nickname during his medical training. He finds it rather unusual if people don’t refer to him as “Doc” as he has grown so accustomed to it. |

| Strengths & Weaknesses | Strengths: Kolen is considered to be one of the best doctors in the quadrant, learning his trade from Dr Arluk Volou, one of the finest Vulcan physicians to have lived. He is incredibly well educated in almost every known Human, Klingon and Vulcan ailment. Weaknesses: Xatoo doesn’t always know when to stop. Whether it is treating a patient, or pushing for something he truly believes in and has strong conviction towards. This has landed him in trouble with his superiors on occasion. |

| Ambitions | His main ambition in life was to meld his two passions together: medicine and serving Starfleet. However, in the long-term he can see himself in a position of command eventually, possibly assigned to a medical ship. |

| Hobbies & Interests | He enjoys listening to classical music and reading poetry - something he only started doing following his joining with the Kolen symbiont. He is also fascinated with Earth medical history, stretching back to the 18th century. In particular, he enjoys studying 20th century mental health and psychiatric medicine. When off duty, he can usually be found in his office in sickbay, or in his quarters, reading old books and manuals from around those time periods. |
| Personal History | Kolen was born on the Trill homeworld as Xatoo Fero. He had an unremarkable childhood, but was considered to be bright and above average throughout his education. He was chosen by the Symbiosis Commission as a prospective candidate for joining with a symbiont. Following rigorous testing, it was decided that Xatoo would be joined with the Kolen symbiont. This occurred when Xatoo was only 18 years old. Kolen’s previous host, Wipek, had been a Starfleet Medical Officer for over 35 years. When the Kolen symbiont joined with Xatoo, that urge to practice medicine became very overpowering. So at 19 years of age, Kolen entered the Trill Medical School at the capital city, completing his studies when he turned 24 years old. Following his graduation ceremony, Kolen applied to Starfleet Academy for the medical officer training programme. He was accepted almost immediately due to his previous education, and started his studies there at the age of 24. Following his graduation at the age of 28, he was posted on the USS Judd Nelson as relief medical officer. Following three years service, he transferred to Starbase 210 as Assistant Medical Officer. Remaining on the Starbase for four years, his next posting would be the USS Aries as Assistant Chief Medical Officer. Following a relatively short time on the Aries, only two years, he transferred to Starfleet Medical on Earth as an Advanced Medical Researcher. He was part of the design and programming team that worked on updated versions and patches for the EMH programme. He remained here for six years, and found it to be his most enjoyable role yet. However, Kolen yearned to be back on a starship, so when there was an opening on the USS Benvolio as Chief Medical Officer, Kolen knew he had to apply. He remained on the Benvolio for 3 years before transferring to the USS Liberty. |
