Blood on your Hands - FINAL

Posted on Wed Nov 4th, 2020 @ 10:00pm by Captain Rhenora Kaylen & Lieutenant JG Sarah Wilson & Chief Petty Officer Remal Kajun

Mission: Diplomatic Masquerade
Location: Sickbay

Some time and several coffees later the hard working team leant back in their chairs, their bodies protesting from being hunched over for so long.

"It's done, just need to test it" Wilson announced "you are brilliant, you know that right?" She considered her compatriot.

Taka wanted to accept the praise offered at face value but knew the better tact was to nod and redirect as his father had shown him many times before. Prop those around you up with compassion and support and you will be living higher than the trees. "Thank you doctor but I am confident we could not have done this without your leadership." He pressed the hypo in the doctors skilled hands.

The captain hovered nearby, awaiting news that would be coming any minute.

"Are you sure?" Rhenora queried, her concern for her husband paramount.

"Perfectly confident. Every trial and simulation says this will work." Taka announced proudly.

Wilson strode forward, hypo in hand and paused at the side of Remal's biobed.

"Remal, we think we've found a solution. This will hopefully repair some damaged genes and reboot your immune system" she said calmly, raising the hypo and pressing the dispenser into the Bajorans neck.

Rhenora watched on, her untrained eyes not noticing much difference in the lifesigns that flashed across the bedside monitor. Slowly but surely there were signs of improvement.

Sleep. What was sleep? What was the opposite of sleep? His mind drifted in and out between this world and that. He could hear voices and feel a comforting touch upon his hand but they were distant. Like a memory. The young Cardassian he had tried to befriend so long ago, who shared his toy, he was there encouraging him to wake.

She held Remal’s hand, almost willing him to wake up and be instantly healed. It wouldn’t be that simple but even the slightest improvement would put her mind at ease.

Where darkness was there was now a growing light. His eyes and ears were his active senses while his body a secondary feature. He was alive, and certain of his pain though he did not know how long he had been in this position, the concept of time escaping his mind. He focused on his breathing but what brought him back to reality was a heartbeat that was not his own.

Rhenora sensed a change in him, a rousing of the body and an awakening of the mind. She'd been in his position before and knew the uncertainty of waking up in a strange place. The lesion on his face was losing its intensity and would slowly start to heal. Her own hand was on the mend as well. Slowly but surely.

"Good morning" she whispered, calmly as to not startle him.

His eyes opened wide and then quickly shut again. He forced them open once more, blinking rapidly to get them to adjust. Through the haze of light and color showered a brilliant golden light and the face of an angel. He attempted to speak, "Hey. What'd I miss?"

Dr. Wilson was on him immediately with a scanner.

"Oh you know, nothing important" Rhenora started before getting a glare from Dr Wilson.

"The good news is the gene therapy treatment seems to be working. It appears that you had the Cardassian Flu when you were a child and it caused a minor genetic fault. This pathogen played on that. Nothing we couldn't fix though" The doctor smiled in good nature, she ran a few more scans and seemed pleased with the results.

" I bet Maccet was hoping we'd both had the flu when we were younger...he didn't bank on some of us getting vaccinated" Rhenora theorised.

"Many of us were not so fortunate. You'll have to tell me how you managed some day." He attempted to sit up, his lower half going numb from being in one location for too long. But then he realized, "oof maybe not."

"Rest my love, take your time" she soothed, placing a light hand on his chest "you don't want to undo the good Doctor's work"

Dr Wilson smirked at the comment but felt the need to chime in.

"She's right, rest up and you'll get out of here sooner rather than later" she encouraged, inclining the top half of the bed so Remal could sit up whilst still being supported.

The moment was interrupted by a call from the bridge.

"Bridge to Kaylen, we've lost contact with one of the away teams, and the Cardassians have sent a shuttle to the surface".

He looked into her eyes knowing what this meant, she was needed and Maccet was in deep. "Go. I'm in good hands. Besides, I want you to kick his ass for me." He knew she would and he was confident she could. "Just watch your back." He knew the Cardassians well enough to know they fought dirty. And Maccet was probably looking for a fight.

“ I will - I promise” She took the few moments to kiss him deeply - not caring who was around. Remal was safe and on the road to recovery and that's all that mattered. She held his hand and squeezed it one last time before eyeballing Dr Wilson. “Look after him” Not that it needed to be said but it made her feel in control of a situation that was beginning to spiral dangerously out of control.

“Yes Ma’am” Sarah saluted, unable to resist the temptation.

“ Kaylen hare, on my way” She acknowledged the call from the bridge.

Within the blink of an eye those closest to her would see the warm and friendly woman be replaced with the consummate and capable Captain. Subtle changes in the way she held herself, in the set of her jaw and the glint in her eyes. She was readying herself to take on anything. In an instant - she was gone out the doors to dive head first into whatever trouble was stirring forth.
