House Call

Posted on Sat Aug 15th, 2020 @ 3:41pm by Lieutenant Commander Xatoo Kolen

Mission: Welcome Aboard!
Location: Vulcan

ON:

Xatoo had been joined with the Kolen symbiont for over 28 years. Xatoo was only Kolen’s third host, but definitely its longest to date. Before Xatoo there was Wipek, and before Wipek there was Teibbi.

Wipek Kolen had also been a Starfleet medical officer, serving the Federation loyally for just under 35 years. During the civil unrest on Turkana IV, Wipek was accidentally hit by phaser crossfire as he helped transport injured civilians between two buildings. Although Wipek was fatally injured, there was enough time for Xatoo to be transported from the Trill homeworld to be joined with the Kolen symbiont.

Dr Xatoo Kolen stepped onto the shuttle that would take him from the Vulcan home-world to his latest posting. He’d spent the last 4 months studying medicine with the greatest Vulcan physician of his time, Dr Arluk Volou. Dr Volou was a legend of medicine in the Alpha and Beta quadrants, and would regularly take on apprentices from different races and species to broaden medical knowledge throughout the Federation. Kolen’s previous host, Wipek, had also spent time with Dr Volou approximately 30 years ago.

As he took a seat towards the back of the shuttle, his mind drew back to the events of the last few weeks. He had recently been promoted to Lieutenant Commander and had accepted a posting on the newly commissioned USS Liberty, a Sovereign-class starship.

However, a black cloud hung over his departure from his previous posting on the USS Benvolio. He had needed to relieve his former Commanding Officer of duty when she developed a rare neurological disease which had effected her ability to command safely. She had questioned Kolen’s decisions at the time and threatened that his career in Starfleet would be over if he removed her from command. However, Kolen’s ethics and sense of duty rose above any threat the Captain could make. He removed her from command and then resigned his position on the Benvolio.

Thankfully, during the investigation that followed into Kolen’s conduct at the time, he was absolved of any wrongdoing and commended for the incredibly tough decisions he had needed to make. Despite this, Kolen still felt guilty for removing his CO from command and effectively ending her career.

Now he had a chance for a fresh start on a new starship. A fresh start where no-one would know about his previous actions. This thought brought him some serenity, and calmed his mind.

The jolt of the shuttle taking off snapped him back to the present. He looked around the small interior of the transport vessel and wondered how many of the officers and crew would be serving alongside him on the Liberty?
