Meeting the Captain

Mission:
Welcome Aboard!
Location: Captain's Ready Room
Timeline: Current
After locating his quarters and putting his few possessions inside he addressed the computer.
"Computer where is the Captain?"
"Captain Kaylen is in her Ready Room." Came back the emotionless reply of the main computer.
Moments later he stood outside Kaylen's Ready Room. He wiped away invisible dust and tugged his tunic down. Satisfied all was in order he pressed the chime.
Captain Kaylen had left the bridge in the more than capable hands on the ships First Officer. There were now an hour or two into their shakedown cruise and all systems were reporting as nominal. Hopefully they would remain that way. Her Yeoman had deposited another small pile of padds on her desk that required approvals and considerations. Nothing unusual, but something that needed tending to at some stage during the day.
The door chime sounded, breaking her concentration for a moment.
" Come in" She called, looking up from the padds to see who wanted to see her.
Hearing the command to enter, Savar did just that. Entering his eyes focused on the woman behind the desk. *Bajorian* He noticed as he came to a stop in front of the desk.
"Lt. Commander Savar reporting for duty, Captain."
“ Welcome aboard Commander, I understand you are our new Chief Counsellor” Rhenora matched the name to the profile in her senior staff in her mind.
“ Would you like to take a seat? I must admit I’m still catching up on all the new personnel coming on board” She admitted sagely - taking a sip of her coffee and loading up the counsellors service record on her monitor.
“Yes, thank you. That is my understanding as well Captain.” Came back the perfectly modulated voice. As Savar’s eyes locked on hers. And he sat patiently waiting for her reply.
“ Well your service history is exemplary - I’d like to know the person behind the words though, what makes you tick, what constitutes a ‘good day’ for you.” Rhenora prompted, knowing there were often many many layers to any person as opposed to glowing references and posting dates.
“Thank you Captain.” Savar replied politely. “I am a voracious reader and in my spare time I am a practicing illusionist.” Savar told her. “As to what constitutes a good day. For me it is simple. philosophy. To help those I can, be it a crewman or Captain.. To make a difference for the best in a life.”
“ Interesting, a Vulcan illusionist” Rhenora smiled, Savar seemed to be the unique individual.
“ I have an admission to make, my previous ship's counsellor considered me ‘an irrational hothead who trusted gut instinct over fact’, I’m sure the records are in my personal profile somewhere. Whilst there is an element of truth in there - does this cause you concern?” Kaylen threw the curve ball in early in the conversation.
Savar listened in practiced silence as Rhenora spoke. He knew of her record. He had seen her file. While there were numerous incidents where it seemed she trusted her ‘gut’ her instincts always paid off. “It would be illogical for Starfleet to put an irrational hothead in command of a starship. :He returned. “As for this causing me concern? No Captain it does not. If and when it does you will be the first to know.”
“ And THAT is what I wanted to hear” The Captain smiled over the brim of her coffee cup. “ I need to feel you have the authority to question any orders you feel may be emotionally or irrationally driven. Whether it’s worked in the past or not, one of these days my gut instinct is going to prove wrong”
“Understood.” Savar nodded, “Captain, I will never disagree with you in front of the crew. In private is an altogether different matter.”
“ I give you full authority to challenge my decisions. I need you as a moral compass and a counter for any emotional tendencies. Who better than a Vulcan to temper a Bajoran? I can’t guarantee it will be easy - but I need you to” Rhenora admitted, hating coming out with her shortcomings. Better to have someone charged with her mental wellbeing armed with all the information before they started their work.
“I accept the challenge you present, Captain. It shall prove most interesting.” He replied. “I
Shall endeavor to provide a constant moral compass for you as well as deal with your emotional tendencies as irksome as they may be. I foresee no unusual problems with this arrangement.” He finished.
“ Very good then Counsellor - I feel you are well and truly up for whatever whatever the universe throws at us. Now is there anything I need to know before we get too far into this mission?” She questioned, reviewing the Counsellor’s profile again.
“I do not believe so Captain. Should you have any questions you know how to get in contact with me. You may call me Savar as my last name is quite impossible to pronounce..”
“ I appreciate that, trying to pronounce your full name in a crisis could be problematic. I hope you do not see any offense in this” Rhenora replied, confirming his previous statement.
“I see and take no offense Captain. Do not trouble yourself. It is quite acceptable.”
“ Now there is one more matter I would like to discuss.” Rhenora’s tone changed back to a serious note. She’d considered this matter at some length before deciding when to put it on the table.
“And that is Captain?” Savar questioned.
“ I’d like to appoint you as the ships’ Second Officer. You are more than qualified and are the most likely candidate to actively contribute to the Command Team in all matters. I’m sure Commander Lexington will agree when I have a chance to advise her”
“The honor is to serve. I accept the position as Second Officer. I hope to serve to the best of my ability If you find me inadequate you of course are free to replace me.” Savar replied evenly.
Rhenora tried not to be taken aback by his comment - Vulcans did take some getting used to.
“ I’m sure I will not need to” She stammered after a moment.
Savar studied her, “Something else Captain?”
“ Not at this time - Thank you Commander, and welcome aboard” The Captain replied with a smile, turning her attention back to the padds in front of her as Savar left the ready room in an air of grace only Vulcans could ever achieve.
