Backpost - Checking in.

Posted on Mon Jan 25th, 2021 @ 8:51am by Captain Rhenora Kaylen & Lieutenant Dean House

Mission: The Jungle
Location: Ready Room
Timeline: Current

It took a little bit for Dean to get to the Quarter Master first. Get settled in his quarters. He'd have preferred to have just gone to the Executive Officer and his Department Head to report in first. however, it wasn't always received very well to show up with your duffle on your shoulder either. Get told to go back get your quarters sorted first.

That or he got to comfortable waiting around on Deep Space Nine for the ship to get there and then his transfer papers to be flagged. Either way, there were questions about both the Executive Officer and his Department Head. Which apparently neither were available for some reason. As such, he'd just ping the computer for the Captains location. Next in the chain after all.

Taking the nearest Turbolift and up to the Bridge. Giving a slight look around it a moment, before walking across it and into the alcove where the Ready Room was. pressing the pad button for the chime.

" Come in" was the call from within the small but comfortable office to the side of the bridge. Rhenora had spent the last few hours reviewing the rules relating to the disappearance of the USS Manchester. They would be passing the region of space where the ship went missing nearly a decade ago and the captain was keen to investigate on their way through.

The first thing that Dean usually always did, was look around the area, room, whatever the case may be. In this case, personal items that the Captain may have about of it, before coming to attention. "Lieutenant Dean House, reporting, Captain."

"Ahh Lieutenant House, welcome aboard. My apologies for not meeting you upon your arrival" she rose and extended a hand towards the Liberty's new assistant security and tactical chief. He would provide Tyroh with some much needed help in running two departments on such a large vessel. "At ease, please, take a seat."

"I would usually expect the Captain having something else to be doing than waiting on a crew member at the docking port." Dean reached and took the hand, shaking it lightly. "I took the liberty to already get my quarters settled, and since I noticed that our Executive Officer is unavailible as is my Department Head," sitting down. "Here I am."

"Indeed here you are, we're grateful to have you, we've been a little short staffed for a few months" Rhenora admitted, sitting herself back down in the high backed chair behind her desk. "So tell me a little about yourself? We're just about to head into a new mission so your application was timely"

There was a bit of a pause from Dean, then he motioned a hand at the desk, in turn her as well. "Other than what you've already looked at and read in my records, ma'am?"

"Correct. Records and personnel files are fine for getting to know someone's ability. I'm more interested in suitability, how you fit into our dynamic and varied team? " She prompted. It was a tough question be she asked all new officers the same thing. Grades are nothing without the personality and ability to work with the people around you.

"Well you obviously know that part of my medical record is sealed for certain eyes only. I'm sure you looked into that part as well. I'm still like anyone else. Trying to do my part, live a normal life, as normal as I can. I have interests, hobbies just like anyone else. I make a mean sandwich I've named a Deanwich."

"A mean sandwich?" Rhenora's eyebrows rose in curiousity " You'll need to brief my Yeoman regarding this sandwich. As for your file, I have read what your call the highlights, I have it pegged to read in completion later this afternoon. Give me the highlights?" She admitted, putting down the padd and regarding him with an inquisitive expression.

"I'm not entirely sure what there is to really explain to be honest. We all know about Augments from the Euginic Wars, World War Three. Down to Arik Soong's manipulation of Klingons. Which split the race. Then Khan and the SS Bontany Bay, Doctor Julian Bashir. A number of other's with genetic manipulation. Mine was no different, done when I was young, never knew about it until I got older. I guess the quickest way to sum it up would be to think of Khan's abilities."

"Without the predisposition for galactic domination I hope" Rhenora smiled, hoping the ease the tension. "Rapid healing, extra strength and visual acuity, am I on the right vein there?" She pulled up his file and skimmed through to find what she was looking for. Hearing it first hand was always better than reading a file.

Dean gave a nod, "For the most part yes. Also..." tilting his head a bit. "I have quite decided on the galactic domination thing yet."

Rhenora prided herself of being able to read people, she could tell there was only good humour in the words and hoped the hell she was right. "Well in the case, until you are decided shall I confine you to the brig?" She humoured him with a joke of her own.

"I'm not entirely sure, my dear Captain. I might like it in there, and then just use it as an excuse to figure out how to escape." Dean giving a light little smirk.

"Well if you ever get bored, which I can assure you that you will not, I will allocate some time for you to contemplate such matters" the Captain replied with a laugh and a smile. She had a feeling that Dean was going to fit in just fine.

"I'll keep that in mind, then, Captain." Giving a bit of a pert nod. "Any more personal questions, or should we possibly get to what had you so dug into thought when I came in?"

" No more questions, we're heading by where the USS Manchester went missing 10 years ago and I hope to be a be able to run some scans as we pass by" she turned the padd around to show the new officer.

"Hmm...could I possibly get that information? And you just did." Dean took the PADD if she let him and started looking it over, more importantly the past things, before the disappearance.

She handed him the padd, the data files were public knowledge so there was nothing classified within them. The main issue is the exact location where it was feared the Manchester went missing was now a 'No Go' zone. They would have to say in the Green zone and only scan and they went past.

"Hmm..really? A no no square?" Shaking his head a little bit, "That's not suspicious at all, noooo..." Looking again and still looking for what the Manchester was even doing around there. "Obviously we're going to ignore that, right?"

" A red zone with a conglomeration of planets that are known to be hostile" Rhenora explained, activating the star chart on her monitor and turning around so Dean could see. " The Manchester was lost somewhere around this area" She pointed to a location near one of the planets. "No-one has heard from them, and any vessels sent to investigate their disappearance were attacked"

Dean pursed his lips a little, "Well that is a simple fix, Captain."

Kaylen tilted her head to the side a little, intrigued as to what his new officer was going to say next.
"How so?"

"Well you see here," Dean pointed to the open spot where the Manchester supposedly disappeared. "Obviously that's a given and where one would want to check first." Shaking his head, "Not at all. That was the last spot that the ship had contact, not where it was the last time it was actually about. For all we know it is just a drift. Also if it was attacked, since you said that the sector of space is hostile, they may have been adrift and pulled into one of the planets gravitational field and pulled in." He had more to mention but stopped so that Kaylen could take that in first.

" I had considered that possibility - but adrift for 10 years?" Rhenora raised an eyebrow. "Still it's a red zone around that area, we have specific instruction not to enter under any circumstances" She explained.

Dean nodded, "Even 10 years. Which, comes into question that red zone. Do you remember the Kobayashi Maru?" Probably didn't need to say any more than that. Again, he did still have more to offer about a way around the red zone.

" Of course" The Captain replied, there wasn't a Captain in the fleet who didn't have to undergo the scenario based training in an unwinnable situation.

"So which course of action did you choose to take, Captain?"

" I attempted to rescue the civilian vessel, and died in the process, as does everyone else who attempts it. You're suggesting we enter the red zone and conduct a search even though previous attempts to do so have been met with harsh retaliation?" She asked, sitting back in her chair but keeping an open mind.

Dean's head tilted to the side in answer to her question about what she thinks he was suggesting. "I didn't actually do that. It had nothing to do with knowing what the test was about, or how it went down. I did it a different way. As for your real question. Yes. I suggest we do go in there, however not the way you might think of."

"I'm intruiged" She said simply, giving him the green light to explain himself. Whilst she already had a plan in mind she was always open to suggestion.

"According to this, the fifth planet and confirmed the Manchester, right? Except now it seems like you're not so sure. Instead of going in there directly, aside from the obvious, which is trying to talk to these groups. Circumvent them all together. They can't be in all places at all times."

" An interesting theory" Rhenora agreed, looking at the starchart again ". And what if we get attacked like the others ships or vanish like the Manchester itself. There is a reason Starfleet have this designated as a NoGo zone"

There was a little smirk given, "And that, my dear Captain is where all that data comes in handy. If we're not going to try talking, then we do like I did on the Maru. We masquerade around using one of their ships signals and beacon codes. How do we get that you ask? We already have them."

The Captain reviewed the information and considered her options.

"Here's what we're going to do. We're going to conduct some long range scans as we get closer. If we detect anything we may move to the option you have suggested but I'm not taking the ship in without evidence. "She said, explaining her current mission plan.

"Eer of caution then it is. At least there's the suggestion, yes. A shuttle would be less invasive though."

" It would, and if the situation calls for it, I'll leave it to you to have a shuttle prepped and ready with a flight plan filed to go" Kaylen smiled, satisfied that this new officer wasn't afraid of offering suggestions.

Dean nodded, "I'll do that when I'm dismissed, then again though....there is the Captain's Yacht.." A little mischief twinkling in his eyes.

"You scratch the yacht and you'll be scrubbing conduits for the rest of your career" Rhenora chuckled, rising and extending her hand." You've got some work to do Lieutenant, better get to it"

Standing up when she did, he took her hand again. "I'll try not to let you down, Captain."

"Just do your best Mr House, and you won't ever let me down" Rhenora smiled, remaining standing until the new officer had left the office. Sitting again she buried herself in reports regarding the Manchester disappearance once more.
