Mission: The battle's not over
Location: Ready Room
Timeline: A few minutes after the briefing

Her discussion with Kell over, Freya had made her way to the Ready Room to speak with Finchley as requested. Pressing the door chime she straightened her uniform jacket as she waited for admittance.

"Come!" Finchley said.

Offering a smile as she entered Freya walked over to Finchley’s desk. “You wanted to talk to me Captain.”

"Yes Lieutenant, feel free to get something to drink for yourself and then have a seat" he said.

“Thank you Sir” Walking over to the replicator she soon returned with a chilled lemonade, taking a seat in front of Finchley’s desk.

"You'll be aware of the change in Command" Finchley began "I wanted to ask if there's been any adverse reaction from the crew? I'm not asking about anyone in particular, just a general consensus."

Freya sipped her drink before putting it down on the end of the desk. “To be honest, I haven’t noticed any adverse reaction. It obviously came as a surprise, but that is to be expected. I think with Captain Shannon remaining onboard it’s helped with the situation.”

"I'm glad to hear that Lieutenant" Finchley replied "and what is your own personal reaction?" he asked.

“Mine?” Freya offered a smile. “It makes no difference to me Sir. Starfleet has deemed you a capable Captain, as such I have no problem with it. Besides, after her injuries Captain Shannon could use the time to rest and recuperate.” She paused for a moment. “Actually Sir, on a different note I’ve been thinking of changing back to my family name, my husband and I have been divorced for long enough now I see no reason to retain my married name. With your permission I'll have my personal details corrected to show Savette as my surname.”

Finchley looked up as the doors to the Ready Room as Freya began speaking. Karadis strode in and stood directly behind the Counsellor and said "It's time."

"Sir" Finchley said.

Karadis gave him a confused look.

"It's time...Sir" Finchley reiterated.

"Ah, right, formalities" Karadis replied "I forgot how anal you are when in company...Sir."

Finchley just shook his head, there was little point in saying anything to his Chief Intelligence Officer there and then, he'd speak to her later on.

Turning back to Freya he said "If that's your preference Lieutenant, permission granted. You asked in the briefing for more access to data in case there's something classified on R'nam, well, Karadis here will grant you a temporary higher level access code, but will remain with you and read the files you require before handing any of them over to you."

“Yes Sir” Freya turned to look at Karadis, offering a warm smile. “Looks like we’ll be getting to know each other better Commander.”

Karadis looked down at Freya, then placed a hand on her shoulder "Have no fears Lieutenant, I'll make sure you get everything you desire."

Freya smiled. “Thank you Commander, I appreciate that.”

"Well, just make sure you take care of the job in hand both of you" Finchley said "R'nam certainly seems to be a slippery customer. I want this guy prepped and then processed so we get everything we need from him."

“I’ll do what I can Captain” Freya smiled, “I should be able to get a ‘feel’ for the type of person R’nam is from his file. Hopefully that’ll give me some idea of a strategy on how to deal with him.”

"He's Cardassian" Karadis said, baring her teeth for a second "They may have lost the war, but they're not to be trusted, not if the rumours are true about the Dominion rebuilding. I wouldn't trust one of them as far as I could throw them, and I'm strong enough!" she said, taking her hand back off of Freya's shoulder and flexing her well toned muscles.

“That could make things more complicated” Freya frowned. “Cardassians are known for being trained in how to protect their minds from outside influence. It could make R’nam difficult to read.”

Karadis looked at Finchley "Do I bring 'him' in Bird?" she asked, using his familiar.

Finchley sat back in his chair and steepled his fingers as he contemplated his answer. After a number of seconds he replied "Not just yet, we'll use that card if we have to, but I want the Lieutenant to have first crack at R'nam."

Karadis nodded her reply, then turning back to Freya she said "We have a number of ways we can try to get him to talk, but as the Captain just said, you're first up."

“First up before he’s brought in?” Freya looked at Karadis then at Finchley. “That’s not what I was expecting.”

Finchley realised the confusion and said "The 'him' Karadis was referring to was not R'nam, Lieutenant, she's referring to a...specialist, someone who can extract information from difficult people who don't want to talk to us. When I said 'you'd' have first crack at R'nam, I meant when he's brought in for questioning. I hope that clears up any confusion?"

Freya smiled and nodded. “It does indeed Sir. The one plus point of not having dark hair is the fact that I’m not always recognised as being a Betazoid, though my eyes do tend to give it away somewhat. Once R’nam is aboard I’ll observe him during questioning and see what we can get from it.”

Karadis looked at Freya and said "Let's go Lieutenant, it's time for the fun to begin."

Finchley hid a smile, Karadis was a card, she really was.

Freya grinned and nodded. “By all means Commander” She looked back at Finchley. “With your permission Sir?”

"Oh please" Finchley replied, gesturing towards the exit.

"Let me know how you both get on" he said as he watched the pair leave.
