Mission:
Trapped in Time
Location: USS Liberty - Ready Room
Timeline: Current - Mission Briefing +1
[Quarters]
Kell arose early, as planned. The recreation area wasn’t as conducive to run so she opted for the holodeck. That would give her more options of where she could run anyway.
[Sickbay]
An hour later she was freshened up and watching the turnover from the night shift. The two crewmen going off seemed to prefer the overnight role and were competent to maintain her confidence that they could handle it with little interference on her end. She would still swing in now and then to lend a hand; she believed in being involved and not just dictate to everyone like they were generic staff.
The oncoming wave was a bit larger than normal as everyone else in the medical group would be showing up. If there were bigger announcements she’d have had the off-peak shift stay over but she’d already went over her expectations with them and released them to their time off.
[CMO’s office]
Kell sat in her chair and sat back, glad she still felt relaxed after the meeting. She’d already reviewed the current schedule and had no changes thus far, which seemed to ease any tension in the ward a great deal. She had no intention of breaking what was working and made it clear she would be working with them, as a team, which also went over well. She was sure there would be some doubters but time would tell as she proved good on her promises.
The medical department appeared to be in good hands across the board with only one possible exception, which she’d monitor and make sure they had the support they needed to succeed. She’d set aside some time in the next few days to meet with the team leads, needing the time to review a few more details so she came into each meeting knowledgeable and informed.
Glancing down at her forearm she realized she had yet to even bring up the regular desk display since she’d arrived. She was so used to just having the military-style PADD on her forearm it was pretty much second nature. It was so much easier than a conventional one that she tended to lose, laying it down somewhere, or switching with another by accident. And this one was ruggedized in case of immersion, or impact, or any number of physical or liquid maladies ever-present in the medical, or her previous veterinarian, profession.
First, she needed to check her messages to see if Kerr had responded with a time in his schedule to review what she’d dug up on Cardassians, and one in particular. It would be much easier to plug into his schedule than the other way ‘round.
"Kerr to Asaa, have you located anything on file regarding R'nam?" Finchley asked.
=====
"It appears our person of interest has been in a few scrapes, one in particular required some tissue repair. I should be able to use that to further confirm the identity of the man that is brought in. Facial rec can be duped, in some cases, but there are a number of biological markers that are much more difficult to mask or fool."
Not being interrupted yet, Kell continued. "He doesn't get regular medical check-ups, and I sent you the list of locations where he has received medical attention, at least that which was recorded in a log. Those marked _fake id_ are where he used some kind of false identification for whatever reason. Those were the ones that took the longest to find as they were some of those biological markers I mentioned."
She hesitated in order to give the CO an opportunity to interject...
"There's also a timeline for those locations in case you can see a pattern. I didn't cross-reference other incidents near those times, at those locations, in case it would raise any flags, plus my access to much of that kind of info would be restricted."
"So far, that's what I know. I could give you a statistical indication of whether he's telling the truth or a lie during his interrogation, but with a couple of betazoids present, they'll be able to give you much more reliable insight."
"I haven't briefed in anyone from my staff about this Cardassian at present. If medical is summoned to the high-risk brig, that will go straight to me. I have a couple of my staff pre-selected based on data on hand that I can call in that have the required medical skillset, as well as being certified in non-lethal restraints, should that need arise. I would rely on security present to handle that otherwise of course."
"I have placed equipment in the cell, hidden behind panels, so that's all complete. I'll have a regular scanner but I'll more than likely be paying attention to the cross-references to confirm a highly reliable analysis. Is there anything else I need to pursue?"
Finchley listened intently as Kell gave him his report. As Kell finished he replied "Thank you Doctor, that was very comprehensive and thorough. I have a gut instinct about this R'nam, I don't think he's stupid, he's evaded us for a long time and I believe he'll know we'll bug or place sensors in the cell. However, if he does find one or two, that could work to our advantage as it'll relax him, he'll believe that he's gotten the better of us. Just make sure at least one sensor can't be found. There's something else you can do for me. Go back to DS9 and see Doctor Max Clerk, we served together during the war. Tell him 'Bird says hi', then see if you can find out guy in the Dominion medical war records he has. If he starts to get funny about you wanting to do that, tell him I'll let everyone know about Stanyx...he'll relent and give you the access you need and the appropriate clearance level."
Kell nodded, even though he couldn't see her on comms. "The devices I hid are exactly like that. If he can find one I would expect him to, that's another reason I placed the 2nd one, and much harder to find. He shouldn't expect to find it farther away and where I placed it, it would normally be out of range, but that one is quite sensitive, it will perform reliably. I'll look up the good doctor today, I want to be as armed as the rest of you, but mine will be with knowledge."
"Good" Finchley replied "Report back to me after you've been to see Max...I mean, Dr Clerk."
Kell signed off, feeling confident, maybe for the first time since arriving on board. Turning her arm up she started typing into her PADD.
