Mission:
Healing of Minds
Location: Ready Room
Yeoman Ronson Mitchell carefully balanced the tray on one knee as he reached for the door chime to the Captain's Ready Room. The Liberty had just dropped the colonists off along with the replaced supplies and medical equipment Dr Wilson had requisitioned from DS9. There had been a crew transfer whilst they did the flyby to pick up supplies and the orders were on the top of the pile balanced carefully on the tray between a tall mug of coffee and an equisized cup of tea.
" Come in" Rhenora called, looking up from discussing the ship's news with Savar as the Liberty cruised out of the Bajoran system.
" Coffee Ma'am, Tea Commander, and reports." He set the items down and beat a hasty retreat, thankful he had delivered the personnel transfer padds before the new crewman arrived to report to the Captain. Now that would have been embarrassing.
Upon exiting the Ready Room he bumped into an Andorian dressed in the gold of Engineering.
"Pardon me" He excused himself and headed back to his tiny office to compile the next series of reports.
As Lieutenant Kla'ren went to the ready room door, he reminisced his time aboard the USS Lincoln nearly ten years back, and the times he was a Yeoman, just months out of the academy. When he got to the door, he tapped the door chime.
"Come in" Captain Kaylen called as she picked up the coffee Ronson had dropped off and the top of the stack of padds he'd placed in priority order on her desk.
The Andorian walked in and stood at attention. "Lieutenant Thriss Kla'ren reporting as ordered sir" said Kla'ren as he handed Captain Kaylen a padd stating his new assignment.
" Oh! That would be this padd on the top of Ronson's pile that's marked 'do this first'" Rhenora laughed, she reached across the table and accepted the transfer papers, checking them over to make sure everything was in order.
" Well Lieutenant - may I be the first to welcome you aboard. We are in desperate need of a Chief Engineer." She admitted, gesturing for him to take a seat next to Savar. "May I introduce Commander Savar, First Officer"
"Nice to meet you Commander" the Lieutenant said as he took a seat. "As well as you, Captain".
Savar inclined his head in a short nod. "Lieutenant." He replied simply.
" So given I only received your orders a few moments ago, give me the highlights of your career. I'm sure you're more than qualified for the job, but I'm more interested in what makes you tick as a person" Rhenora leaned back against her chair, coffee in hand to listen to what her new engineer had to offer.
"Well, to start, before the Liberty, I served on the USS Varley, a Galaxy Class, as an Engineering Officer, then an Assistant Chief Engineering Officer for a few years. After that, I became acting Chief Engineer when the Chief Engineer at the time had an incident resulting in him being severely injured, and unable to continue. After he returned, I was the Assistant Chief until 2374, when he retired, and I took his place after he recommended me for promotion. I served on the Varley for almost a decade actually" Kla'ren responded.
"Impressive" Rhenora rubbed her chin, considering the new crewman's words. Most that came to the Liberty were of fine calibre - Starfleet wouldn't assign them otherwise. What really interested the Captain though is how this Andorian was to work with? Who was he as a person? There would be time for that as time progressed.
"You've come on board at an opportune time Chief, our engines are overdue for some much needed attention and we're just about to head further out from the beaten track for the surveys and research. It'll give you some time to get to know the Liberty and just what makes her tick. I'm sure you're up to the challenge" She smiled, breaking the tension in the room.
"I will need to get used to some things, but I am definitely up for the challenge" replied the Andorian.
Savar had been quiet as Rhenora asked her questions of the new engineer but now hw had a question of his own. Glancing at Rhenora, he then looked at the Andorian. "A question Lieutenant. After so much time on the Varley where you were already the Chief Engineer. Why did you elect to transfer to the Liberty?"
Rhenora nodded towards her XO - it was a good question and one that begged to be asked. She turned her attention to the Andorian.
"Well Commander, to be honest, I needed a change in my career. Yes, I spent 9 years on the Varley, but at the same time, the need for change was there, and I did want to serve on a Sovereign class, and I wanted to wait until the time was right" the Lieutenant responded. "That being said, I will definitely miss serving on the Varley."
"Interesting." Savar commented. "There are other Sovereign class starships in need of a Chief Engineer. SO my question remains, why the Liberty?"
Rhenora looked towards her XO with a cheeky grin "Oh come now Commander, doesn't every officer in the fleet want to serve on the Liberty?" She joked.
"Indeed Captain, though I am still interested in the Lieutenant's reply." Savar answered nonplused.
Thriss thought for a moment. Why did he choose the Liberty? "That's a good question. Part of it was just that. I have heard good things about the Liberty. But, the other part of my decision of the Liberty was a gut feeling that my place was on this ship" Kla'ren answered. He knew that even if he didn't have that gut feeling, he probably would have joined the Liberty anyway, but he pondered over what it was.
" I see" The Captain replied, rubbing her chin thoughtfully. She gave a lot of credence to gut feeling. " Well I trust that your gut feeling is correct and we are privileged to have you on board. I'm sure you'll fit right in"
"I think, in time, I will" replied the Andorian.
"If there's nothing else Lieutenant, I'll let you get settled in and get to know your engine room." Rhenora stood and offered a hand to the Andorian "Dismissed"
As Thriss left the ready room Rhenora remained on her feet and addressed her first officer.
"Well Commander, lets get this show on the road shall we?" She smiled and guestured towards the door, allowing him to proceed her back onto the bridge. A new mission awaited them.
