As with most mornings she awoke to the sound of an alarm and a feeling deep within. The alarm would pass, the feeling would not. It was ever-present and annoying as hell. She had once described the sensation as an urge, much like a man having a morning erection, but different. How she knew the sensation was different was what made her who she is.

She tossed back the sheet, rolled into a sitting position and stretched her back, her arms, and her neck. On the nightstand, two glasses, the ice mostly melted. The condensation was forming a pool of liquid upon the glass surface. There was clothing strewn about the floor reminding her of the night she had prior. And on the air a smell, familiar, of a body that needed cleansing.

She stood, curling her toes into the soft fibers of the fur carpet. She Yawned, stretched some more, scratched a deep, difficult-to-reach itch, and then headed into the bathroom to shower the funk of the night from her spotted skin. Half an hour or so later she emerged, hair wrapped in a towel, robe draped over her shoulders.

Her head was pounding lightly, the voices within practically crying out once again as she sat at her desk and began applying her makeup. Today, she would need to make an impression. Today was the first day of her new assignment. She was finally a Commander, though not yet the first officer, it was a start.

The monitor interrupted her thoughts as it announced an incoming message. Coy rolled her eyes, knowing who it was before answering the call. She pressed the call, “Hello Mother.” Her sass was high this morning but she knew what was coming.

“Good morning to you too. You know you slipped away from your own celebration party early last night. I was hoping to have you meet a number of fine young gentlemen I had worked hard to line up just for you.” Her mother was oh so humble. “What was so important to have pulled you away?”

Something stirred in the bed behind her, “Nothing important mother. I told you I wanted to turn in early so that I could make a good impression on my new Captain.” She blotted her lipstick. “This is my first Command position and I want it to go well, don’t you?”

“Of course I do. It’s your father, you know he worries about you ever since the joining. You know how he gets.”

“Is that why you called? You know we’ve had this talk mother, multiple times If I recall correctly. I’m fine, that’s what you want to hear right? I’m fine, the symbiote is fine, if not a bit intrusive, you have nothing to worry about.” She said in a huff. Her mother’s face was slightly stunned as though she were just stung.

“Listen, I didn’t want this. I know you and dad didn’t want this, but it was either this or let the symbiote die and you know I couldn’t do that. I mean if I had a choice to do it over, I might have said no, but I don’t so it doesn’t matter. This is who I am now Mother.”

“Who’s on the line? Come back to bed and show me that trick you did with your tongue again.” Came a whine came from behind her.

“Wait, who’s there with you?” Her mother asked.

Sighing, “It’s no one Mother, just a bunkmate.” she lied, and no sooner than she said it a pillow struck her in the back of the head. It was enough to cause her to giggle, turn and return fire.

“Rosa Prilen!” Her mother demanded as she witnessed her scantily clad daughter pillow-fighting with a naked girl on their shared bed.

The name-calling got her attention. She froze, moved over, and got in close to the screen. “It’s Coy Mother. Has been for 5 years now. Get used to it.” Before her mother could say another word Coy closed the channel.

The yearning within wanted her to return to the pillow fight, it always did. Instead, she bent over and picked up clothes that were not her own from the floor, tossed them to her guest, and said, “Get dressed, and get out.” It was a rough start to her day.

The Liberty would arrive soon and all she wanted to do now was go back to bed and start over. Instead, she felt a drink would pass the time.
