Crew Training

Posted on Fri Dec 18th, 2020 @ 11:04pm by Lieutenant Commander Tyroh Vantic & Chief Petty Officer Sapphire

Mission: Healing of Minds
Location: Security Office
Timeline: Following the post "Blue Blood"

After her brief detour to sickbay, Sapphire went to the security offices immediately. She approached the department head, saying, "Good afternoon, sir. I am Sapphire, your new Master-at-Arms." She extended her hand in greeting.

Tyroh stood from his desk as the imposing Andorian approached. He had been going over departmental reports over the last few hours, along with any reports the Captain had filed regarding the assaults on Vulcan. Taking time off from work didn't mean that life, in general, stopped happening. So there would always be an element of 'catching up' that would be required of a senior officer.

One of those things involved crew assignments and reassignments. Personnel movement to and from any ship occurred most frequently when in port. Chief Petty Officer Sapphire was another addition to the Liberty that was, in Tyroh's estimation, sorely needed.

"Chief Sapphire," the Angosian captured the Master-at-Arms' hand with his own and shook it. "Welcome aboard. We have had a lot of movement, of late, in this department but your arrival, in particular, is most welcome. Please, have a seat."

Sapphire nodded and sat down. "I am happy to be here." She had wanted an assignment on a Sovereign class ship. It was not merely for the sake of prestige but also because it promised to get her where some of the most challenging and therefore worthwhile assignments were to be found. "Since coming aboard half an hour ago, I've already heard rumours about attacks on our crew on Vulcan. Most unusual."

"Yes, quite unusual," Tyroh agreed, reclaiming his seat. It wasn't often one came across much in the way of crime from among the core Federation worlds. It happened, but it wasn't frequent. The Vulcans, in particular, were quite steadfast when it came to the safety and security of its citizens and visitors.

"I am still processing the entirety of the assaults," the security chief continued, "and I still have to consult with the Captain, but once I do I'll want for you to be involved with any security details that may arise from the investigations. Will that work for you? I know you've only just arrived."

"Of course", Sapphire said. "I did not forget how to use a phaser while I was on leave between assignments." And the little injury she had suffered wasn't going to slow her down either, since that cute doctor had taken good care of it.

Sapphire opened her uniform jacket to show him the fabric beneath. "This thick layer is a thermal suit. It is designed to keep my skin cool underneath, and it'll radiate any excess heat away from the body. It works even through the uniform, so I always wear it. This way, I can function even in the otherwise insufferable heat of the planet Vulcan."

Tyroh eyed the material closely, a little curious as to its composition. There were many members of the security and tactical department, as well as members of the crew in general for that matter, that had specific needs to either their race or their person. The Angosian always found it interesting to learn more about what some of those needs were and if they were being met. Nothing aided a crewmember's integration into a new posting better than making them as comfortable in their environment as possible.

"Interesting. How long can you function in our, or Vulcan's, environment without it," he inquired. It also never hurt to know if members of his staff may be faced with operational limitations, should the situation ever arise, and discuss contingencies if it was required.

"In this environment, at normal activity, I'll be okay", Sapphire said. "On Vulcan, half an hour to an hour at best. I can survive longer, but as the brain overheats, my thoughts become muddled." Andorians and heat really didn't mix well. "Thankfully, most outside environments are pleasantly cool in this galaxy."

"So it would seem," Tyroh agreed, his mind floating back to the heights of summers on Angosia where the average mean temperatures often peaked at 17 degrees Celsius. Angosia itself was a planet that skirted the outer edge of its system's temperate zone, with an axial tilt that barely hit 10 degrees. It wasn't close to what Andoria experienced, of course, but it did make for cool, year round temperatures.

"And that is good to know," the security chief stated, referring to Sapphire's limits in hot, desert-like environments. He made a note in his files, reaching over to the computer interface on his desk with a dark hand and tapping away quickly. He looked up at Sapphire as he typed away. "How are you settling in so far, Chief?"

"I've been aboard for about half an hour", Sapphire said with a shrug. "I went to sickbay first, as I had a shard of crystal in my hand, which I'd rather not have in there. Dropped it off in my quarters as a souvenir, then came straight here."

Tyroh sat back lacing his hands on his desk and glanced quickly from Sapphire's hand back to her face. "Well, you can't just start a story like that and leave it...'hanging', I believe is the term humans use," the barest hint of a smirk creased his lips, curious as to how his new Master-at-Arms got a crystal shard embedded in her hand.

"I was hiking through a cave down on Vulcan, as I got here early", Sapphire said. "Apparently I was a bit too heavy for one section of wall, and when it broke off, I caught myself on a sharp piece of crystal. It's nothing spectacular, I'm afraid. No tall tales of battle and glory, just plain old bad luck."

"Ah, I see," Tyroh shrugged, then reached for a PADD on his desk and handed it over to Sapphire. "At least you came away from the incident with a souvenir. Once you're settled, have a look at the current roster of non-commissioned officers and crewmen on our staff and under your purview. One of my previous security officers had them all on his training regimen before he left but, now that you're here, that task falls to you. Train them and prepare them how you see fit. Then, you and I can review and assess everything in a month and make any changes as needed. Did you have any questions for me?"

Sapphire thought for a moment, then shook her head. "No, not at the moment, sir." She took the PADD, the content of which she was going to review once she had taken possession of her own office space, adjacent to the brig. "I will run standard training sessions to see where everybody is at, and then adjust as improvements are needed or possible."

"Excellent, Chief," Tyroh stood, indicating that the meeting was essentially over. Having a Master-at-Arms was a luxury he hadn't experienced on his previous assignment so this was new territory for him. "I look forward to working with you. If you require anything of me, please don't hesitate to ask."

Sapphire stood. "Yes, sir." She smiled as she headed out, looking forward to meeting new people, and achieving peak performance with the team.
